Finding Your Perfect Fit
Traditional braces can make flossing and cleaning your teeth harder. That's why proper oral hygiene is critical to your orthodontic treatment. Before you leave our office, Dr. Underwood or Dr. Cohen will instruct you about how to best clean your teeth and provide you with helpful hints. As a general rule, we suggest that you brush and floss your teeth after each meal. Maintaining all your appointments and regular dental cleanings may also help ensure optimal results. Typically, most patients have braces for 1 – 2 years, but your treatment time will be based on the seriousness of your case.
After your treatment is finished, we will remove the braces and fit you for a retainer. A retainer will keep your teeth in their place. Our orthodontists can help you pick the right retainer for your teeth.

The American Association of Orthodontists suggests kids visit an orthodontist by age 7. It sounds early, we know! But it just gives us a chance to say hello and check on their growth. Through our complimentary Rising Star program, we can let you know if it’s time to start or if we should just keep an eye on things a little longer.
For Teens
Being a teen is busy enough without worrying about your teeth. The good news is that teens have more choices than ever. You can go with traditional braces and pick fun colors to match your style, or choose clear ceramic braces for a look that’s a bit more subtle. We’ll help you find the look that feels right for you.
For Adults
Guess what? Braces aren’t just for the playground. Adult braces are a fantastic way to reclaim your smile. Whether you missed out on braces growing up or your smile has shifted over time, you’re in great hands with us. It’s never too late to love your smile.
Types of Braces
Our goal is simple. We want to align your bite and improve your dental health in the way that suits you best. Alongside Invisalign® clear aligners, we offer two main types of braces to get you there.
- Traditional Metal Braces: These are the classic choice for a reason. They use stainless steel brackets and wires to gently guide your teeth into place. We use modern metal braces that are designed to be smaller and more comfortable than the ones you might remember. They’re easier to clean and often mean fewer trips to see us for adjustments.
- Clear/Ceramic Braces: If you want the effectiveness of traditional braces but prefer a lower profile, these are a great option. We use tooth-colored or clear brackets made of ceramic that blend right in with your teeth, making them much less noticeable while they do the heavy lifting.
What to Expect
Before we do anything, we’ll take a good look at your teeth with a full exam and X-rays. Then we’ll create a plan just for you. Here is how the process usually goes:
- Placement: We’ll carefully attach the brackets to your teeth and connect them with a flexible wire. It sounds technical, but it’s just the method we use to gently guide your teeth where they need to go.
- Adjustments: We’ll see you regularly to check your progress and tweak the wires. You might feel a little soreness after these visits, but it’s amazing how fast you get used to it. Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually all you need if you feel any discomfort.

I had Invisalign treatment and our son got conventional braces. We had great experience with them. This time, we just went to replace retainers after a few years. The orthodontists have changed at the location we used to go, but they were all nice. My son's retainers had been already broken, so they accommodated him as soon as possible at a different office and made them right there while he waited. (I went home and went back to the office later to pick up, which is a normal practice.)
Initial visit was great! Everyone was polite, professional, patient and kind! From my first phone call with Samm, before I even went into the office- my experience has been amazing! The office is lovely, every single one of the staff I interacted with was fantastic as well. Dr Cohen was so informative and helpful talking about her recommendations for my treatment and Shannon spent lots of time going over options that were available to me. I never felt rushed and appreciate the transparency from the very beginning! Looking forward to starting treatment!
